The Greenway Art Prize
Celebrating at The Greenway Art Prize opening night with family and friends. I enjoyed meeting so many of the artists and getting to see their work in reality. Congratulations to the winners!
ARTIST STATEMENT
I wanted to explore community connection to the urban greenway. I was inspired by this Truman Capote quote... “The wind is us it gathers and remembers all our voices, then sends them talking and telling through the leaves and the fields.” The trees along the canal path looked like they were reaching over the people on the path to the trees on the other side as if they were making a connection, they seemed to be almost whispering to each other in the wind. Initially I made small paintings (plein air) in my journal using automatic and rhythmic drawing to capture the energy of the woods. I then layered paint and colour, alternating the layers of mark making and veiling until I felt I had captured the essence of walking through this urban sanctuary. The Greenway is where we can connect to the bush, our imagination and to each other.
